A Practical Assessment on Prepping

piratical preppingPrepping is a word that has been drug down the road and turned into something not resembling what it actually means.  When you take a practical look at what it means to be a prepper you will see that it not what it is made out to be.  As a Gentleman you should be concerned with the safety and well being of your family.  By not just being a prepper, but being someone that is practical about their prepping, you are going to be able to see your family through tough times.

I dive into what it means to be a practical prepper by assessing the needs of what you should store and invest in.  You not only need items and commodities for a possible disaster, but if you are practical about it, for every day life.  The way that I do my prepping is making sure that whatever I invest in, I can use on a day to day basis.  By me looking at my prepping in a practical way, I am able to justify my purchases and even save money on those purchases.  That is the manly thing to do.

Winterizing Your Home and Vehicle – Skilled Gentlemen Throwback

winterizing home and vehicleThe winter months are upon us.  From the past two shows I have been talking about getting ready for the winter.  This is something that we should all be thinking about and proactively working towards getting ready for.  Winterizing your home and vehicle takes little effort and can save you a lot of money and headache.  So in other words your rate of return of investment is super high for this project or projects.  I personally will be doing most of these things that I am talking about today.  Lets get serious about this though.  We have to work towards keeping our families warm without blowing up the budget.  We also need to make sure our vehicles are winterizing to do their job just in case we have an emergency.

Winterizing your home and vehicle is not a hard task to do, but there needs to be a high rate of return on your investment per project to keep you doing it every year.

Cold Weather Recipes – Skilled Gentlemen Throwback

cold weather recipesThere is no denying that the cold is upon us.  This is the time of year that the darkness starts to overtake the light in their everlasting battle for time in the sky.  Not only are we going to experience shorter days but we are in the prime of the year to have recipes that bring back major traditions.  The concept of traditions can bring someone back in their memories to a time in their lives that made them super happy.  Traditional recipes that make them remember a time that was once an easier time.  Recipes that are not just easy to make and useful to clean out the garden but that have a wonderful taste.  Along with stunning recipes but traditions that make these recipes what they are.  Alone they are just a soup and a stew but with a tradition behind them make it so much more.

Making Gifts for Christmas – Skilled Gentlemen Throwback

making gifts for christmas

Rather you like it or not, Christmas is right around the corner.  Now is the time to figure out what you want to get everyone as gifts.  Going out and buying Christmas gifts can be a daunting task.  Millions of people every year stress out about what to buy their friends and family.  My suggestion is, why don’t you consider making your Christmas gifts?  Think about it, your friend opens up a hand made tankard instead of a bought beer glass.  Which one do you think he will put on the display?  Which one do you think he will pull out to use on special occasions and which one is the daily drinker?

Making gifts is becoming more and more popular now and there are many reasons to do so.  Spend some time this season to further your skills or develop new ones to share with your friends and family.

Skilled Gentlemen Podcast Christmas Special 2016

christmasChristmas is a special time of year for all of us.  It is a time for us to sit around and converse.  A time for us to drink and be merry.  It is a time for gifts and a time for remembrance.  Christmas is filled with history and mythology dating back well before our time and deserves a look.  As gentlemen we should be able to look at history of man and learn, if not just for fun.  As you start your way to bed tonight, I ask you to remember a few things.

Remember the firefighters that are on duty tonight that spend their time away from their family, the police offers that are on duty tonight running down drunk drivers,  EMS is working on keeping people alive in their time of need, and our service members of the military as they spend their time away from family.  Do not take your time for granted, enjoy yourselves and be merry.  I will be looking forward to more podcasts in 2016.

Getting Your House Prepared For Winter

Getting house ready for winterRather you like it or not, winter is getting close.  We are already seeing signs that fall is here with cool mornings and leaves starting to fall.  There are steps that we all should take to prepare for the cold grip of winter.  These are steps that will keep your house and the resources that you rely on from breaking down prematurely.  This is something that if you are a homeowner you should be working on twice a year.  Once in the spring to prepare for the summer and in the fall to prepare for winter.  Not only should you be preparing your house and vehicle for winter’s grips but if you call yourself a gentleman you should be concerning yourself with the very real possibility that you will encouter an emergency.  Getting your family prepared for winter is also a concern that we will be covering.

In the podcast I mentioned that I would link to a YouTube video that I made as a review on a gutter guard to help keep you from spending a lot of time on your roof.  You can find that video here called Cheap Gutter Guard.

Prepping 101- Energy

prepping 101 energyEnergy is something that we all use every single day of our lives.  When we wake up by the alarm clock, turn on the lights, take a hot shower, brew our coffee, watch the morning news, and so on throughout our day.  All of the aforementioned items above uses energy.  What happens when the energy is not there?  Our lives get interrupted in a way that some cannot function.  This should not be the case in a Gentleman’s life.  Especially when it comes to caring for the family.  Prepping is such a bad word that people like to abuse.  My challenge is to convey to your that it is not a bad word.  Arguably it is not a word for you to tell all of your friends about right away, but a concept that you should really consider adding to your life.  Just from the aspect that it is for the longevity of your family should be enough to consider building this into your life.  Join me today as I dig into how to store, capture, and in general keep more energy in your lives.

How can we build REDUNDANCY in our lives with Energy

  • Why prepping matters
  • How do we prepare to satisfy our energy need as it relates to
    • cooking
    • lighting
    • warmth
    • cooling
    • other neat ideas to consider building

A Revisit To A Winter Vortex

Surviving the winter vortexIf you are not aware, we are on the brink of another winter VORTEX!!!  In reality it just another snow storm that is coming through.  It is not that big of a deal, however there are some safety concerns.  Along with trying to get my RSS feed corrected I am going to rehash my first show that had to do with a winter storm.  There might not be a Friday show either, just have to figure things out on my end.

Winter Vortex is a fear mongering term that I got from my daily news show around here.  I do not believe that it is going to be a winter vortex as much as it will be cold air that gets us down below freezing here in North Carolina.  Now up towards Canada it may be “vortexing” but here it is a little over done… But that is besides the topic of today which is being prepared for this up coming winter.  It is getting toward the time of year when we are going to see more colder temperatures and we need to talk about being prepared to care for your family in case of the emergency of lost power or iced roads or anything else that could happen.  Before you hear the closing music you will have all the knowledge that you need to survive the upcoming WINTER VORTEX!!!!

How do we prepare for the winter vortex

Today we are going to cover:

  • Why this is a topic that a skilled gentleman needs to know
  • Why you need to be ready to deal with upcoming issues
  • How many people have died so that you can get this information (hows that for hyped!)
  • Your 5 survival needs, again
  • Some miscellaneous items that you should think about having
  • A quick talk about keeping your vehicle ready
  • A lot of Pro tips and life hacks in today’s show! (I say that tongue-in-cheek)

Snow days are great but with a little planning it can be an epic tradition. Learn how to up your snow day game to where your kids are looking forward to it.

Planning An Epic Snow Day

planning for an epic snow daySnow days come few and far in between around here.  For a portion of us we only see snow around once a year.  For the other portion, you guys probably get sick of the stuff by spring.  Every once in a while we should be able to leave our comfy clothes on and enjoy a day off by drinking excessively and watching television until we are sick of it.  We all work extremely hard and take hardships just to make sure we can pay our bills.  We all deserve a day off once in a while.  Snow days are the best time to do whatever you want to do.  However, today’s show is not just about having a good time without children.  If you have children there is an area where I have spoken about how to enjoy your time with kids.  Think about this, you can start a new tradition with your spouse and children that when there is a snow day, nothing gets done and we all are lazy!  What a tradition to look forward to.

How do we plan for an epic snow day

  • what should we prepare
  • what are some safety concerns
  • what kind of food should be cooked
  • what are some entertainment ideas for adults
  • what are some entertainment ideas for children
  • how you can make up your own excuse for a day like a snow day
