Upgrading Your Home for Cheap

home projects for cheapYour home is your castle.  What happens when your home becomes boring to you?  Springtime is here and it is the time of year that projects start.  Why not spend some time and some money on your house.  You can increase the value and the way that you feel.  Not only that but your children can learn how to do some of these skills through your projects.  Some of my fondest memories were doing projects with my father and grandfather.  I learned a lot from their work.

I have gone through and found a verity of different projects that you can do.  No second mortgage or technical skills required to finish any of these projects.  As men we should be able to complete the smaller projects of this list.  As gentlemen we should be excited to learn how these are done.

Camping Like A Gentleman – Throwback Episode

camping like a gentlemanIf you have never been camping you have not lived yet.   Being outside for a full 24 hours or longer is intoxicating by itself.  You learn a lot about yourself and discover things that you have never known about yourself.  Camping is a learning experience for children by expanding their interests and their imaginations.  Going back to when my grandfather and father took me camping as a child brings back memories that I will never forget.  However there is a right and a wrong way to go camping.

It does not take much to get your family out in the wilderness.  Sleeping under the stars and cooking by camp fire is something that dreams are made of.  All it takes is one well planned trip and you have a camper for life.  Conversely all it takes is one bad experience or a poorly planned trip for you to have a hard time getting your family to camp with you again.  Don’t be that guy that drags his family out into the woods and has to deal with their complaining because of your bad judgments.  Start slow and then work your way up to a harder camp trip.

4 Dad Projects for Spring

4 dad projects for springBeing a dad is one of the best jobs in the world.  I know this because my dad and my grandfather done such a great job teaching me life skills throughout my childhood.  With spring just around the corner, it is a great time to get prepared for some projects to teach your children from.  Understand that there is a golden window that last a few years that a child wants to learn from you.  They want to be around you and will learn anything you teach them.  This is the best time to do these projects with them.  They will not only learn from you but they will keep that knowledge for the rest of their lives.

I am going to talk about 4 different projects that you can include your children in this spring.  Projects that will teach them about construction, vehicles, and self sufficiency.  While doing these projects, please be safe.  Teaching them the ability to do something is just as important as keeping them alive.  I included in the podcast what I would use for building materials but if you feel that you should use something different, please do so.  I have no formal education about construction, just a lot of projects under my belt.

What are the projects that a dad can do this spring?

  • The basics of building a swingset
  • Planting a garden
  • Rebuilding a vehicle
  • Vehicle maintenance

Tree Planting 101

Tree planting 101In no way shape or form is there a stock that is 100% able to increase your profits 10 fold, and if there is you need to punch that guy in the face for lying to you.  I can guarantee you that a tree can though.  Ignoring the fact that a tree will help you be more self reliant and give you free calories from delicious non chemically drowned fruit, there are so many benefits to planting a tree.  I am going to spend the podcast today teaching you all about the benefits of tree planting and busting those myths that people have come up with about it.  It could not be simpler and it could not be more benificial for the environment.  Not to mention how much value that could bring to your life and the life of your family.  Use this summer to find a great place to plant and get started.

Keep in mind that four year old Katarina needs our help to purchase a diabetic alert dog.  Her story and how you can help can be found in the podcast where I interviewed her and her parents.  Man Up and donate to her go fund me page.

Grilling Basics

grilling basicsSpring is in the air.  You can feel it during the heat of the day when you walk outside.  You can smell it as you walk through your grass and stir up the smell.  Your need for a jacket becomes less needed.  Your starting to think about the summer and what involves with it.  Pool parties, camping, holiday parties, and excuses to get outside all lead to one thing.  When you think about men cooking you immediately think of the grill.  The man standing beside the grill with smoke and steam coming out with some amazing food sitting over that glorious flame.  This is the essence of spring.  Grilling out.  But what stands between a normal guy and a grilling master?  Grilling basics.  Today I am going to attempt to teach you about grilling.  If you are new to the concept, which a lot are, you will learn a lot and even if you are a master there is always room to grow.  Don’t be that guy that has a reputation for crappy food.  Gentlemen have the reputation of being able to master the grill!

What are the grilling basics

  • Differences between Gas and Charcoal
  • Burgers
  • Chicken
  • Steak
  • Vegetables
  • General Tips
  • The Ultimate Outdoor Kitchen

A Gentlemans Guide to Pest Control

a gentlemans guide to pest controlEventually in every mans life we deal with a pest, either outside on the homestead or in the home.  As a gentleman we should know how to avoid using the extremely harmful spray or the inhumane traps by using plants and humane traps to do the deal for us.  Pests usually do things for a reason be it get warmer, get food, or shelter down.  We should find a way to either accommodate their needs elsewhere or divert them to other parts of the property because we need certain pests on the property.  Take the humble bat for instance.  These pests eat their weight in bugs every night, keeping them away from you but they cant stay in your gable vent.  By placing a house in a specific area of your property you can enjoy their usefulness without them pooping on your deck and invading your attic.  During the show I spoke about How To Get Rid Of Gnats.  Check this out and consider trying it out in your own kitchen.

There is a lot to cover today, so join me as I talk about:

  • Why gentlemen should not reach for the pesticides right away
  • How fencing helps pest control
  • What we can plant to help with controlling pest
  • Building a house to accommodate a common pest
  • How doing a little bit of cleaning before bed can keep your home free from pests
  • What pest waits for grass to get too tall
  • Humane traps and where they stand
  • When to call the pest control guy and what to ask while hes there

Concert Lawn Ticket Etiquette

concert lawn seat etiquetteConcerts are so much fun to go to but they can be very expensive.  Getting lawn tickets are the way to go when you are looking for cheap seats.  There is a way to act and do while you are in the seats to make sure you are not being “That guy” that I am calling concert lawn ticket etiquette.  This is the idea that you are not the only person there and there is a level of respect for others that you should have in the back of your mind while you are there.  Understand the the etiquette should not be so strict that you do not have a good time but etiquette enough to allow others to enjoy the show also.  Lawn tickets are a whole different beast than the regular seats.

Join me today as I talk about:

  • What I noticed when I was at my concert
  • What are lawn tickets
  • My list of Concert Lawn Ticket Etiquette Tips
    • Be observant of wind drift
    • Stay off others
    • stay seated during the opening bands if your in front
    • don’t get drunk
    • Don’t get stoned
  • Outside of etiquette
