Building a Profitable Homestead

how to build a profitable homesteadEvery man should have some form of homestead.  I have mentioned this in past podcasts ad nauseum.  However, if you were to take a few extra steps you could make the homestead or farm profitable.  This could afford to pay off some of your extra expenses or even so far as to be your full time income.  Even if you do not have land to farm on, there are ways that you can develop and profit from other’s land.  This is not rocket surgery, just laborious and backbreaking work.  However, think about the possibilities it could afford you if you could quit your full time job.

Today I am going to give you the resources to build a homestead that is profitable.  You can take this information and run with it to build the best business you can or just build a really nice landscape.

Raising Chickens – A Complete Guide from Chick to Dinner

chickensRaising a chicken is really not a hard task to do.  Some complicate things with adding math and adding temperatures you have to be in, however a chicken will take care of their self.  There are plenty of reasons why you would want to start raising your own flock from grow house abuse to the marketing nonsense companies use to confuse us.  This podcast is not reasons why to raise your own chickens but more of how to do so.  If you can care for a dog, you can care for a chicken.  There are a few things that you need to know before you get started.  This is why this is considered a complete series.

I have cared for chickens for the past 3 years.  I have seen my own amount of death, life, and culling.  There are short cuts and needs that most tend to leave out when discussing how to raise these birds.  During the podcast I mentioned setting up my coop and the YouTube video that I put together explaining it.  Click here to see Chicken Coop from Old Shed.  This is how I built mine with both comfort and safety in mind.

Building a Farm on the Cheap

building a farm for cheapBuilding a full sized farm is not an endeavor that most people will take on.  The biggest reason is because it is so expensive to start up.  What if I could convince you that ,regardless of what you call your farm, that you can build one that wont break your budget.  I go through all of the different tactics that I have used throughout the past few years to design my homestead.  Down to the questions that you need to ask yourself.  Then I talk about the projects that you will be doing and how to prioritize them based on your own parameters.  Lastly we discuss how to make these projects cost as little as possible.

In the show, I mentioned that you should listen to the podcast about permaculture zones and watch the YouTube video on the subject, here are those links.

Permaculture Design- Zones

permaculture design zonesIn permaculture design you have the idea and concept of zones.  Zones are a way to organize your property to make sure that the correct plants get the appropriate attention based on the fact that you are going to visit certain areas more often than others.  In other words, we are going to take our excuses and our laziness and design an area that keeps me from working harder than I need to.  When you take into consideration that you can sit down with a bit of information (learned from me and others) and completely transform your property from a money sink into a place where you can grow food and feed your family, it is a topic that gentlemen SHOULD take seriously.  I little bit of work mixed with a lot of information and you can feed your family with nutritious food.

What are permaculture zones?

  • A quick review on permaculture design- sectors
  • What are the permaculture zones
  • How important this is in planning
  • This goes beyond hippy, feel good, hug the trees, positive vibes kind of stuff
  • Why we should consider adding zones to our property
  • Zone 0 through Zone 5
  • How they apply on my property
  • The application on a small suburban lot
  • What it looks like on a huge property
  • How to work your excuses into this design

Where can I learn more about permaculture?

Check out my video series that I started on permaculture.  It is a really great way to see permaculture in practice around my property.  Instead of hearing about it, you can see how it works.

Resources:

The only resources used in the show were notes taken from a class I took.  This is a FREE class through the university of Oregon.  Click here for details.

Permaculture Principals- Accept Feedback

permaculture principals accept feedbackThere is a new video on YouTube that you must watch on how I am using Permaculture Principals in my own yard to accept feedback.  I have made some mistakes in this process and need to address this.  I am not going to pretend that I know everything which is why permaculture does such a good job teaching us.  My front yard is a complete mess and it is my job to fix that.  I have planted things in the wrong places and now have to make sure that I fix those issues.

The steps that you should follow to accept feedback:

  1. Understand that you are not infallible and can make mistakes

You can do this by taking a step back and looking at what is going on.  In my case when I stood back I realized that my vision for the land was not what was reality.  After I finished being mad about the whole thing, I was able to accept that there were mistakes.  This is where you have to be ready to accept feedback and ready to listen to the land.

2.   Understand why this was a mistake

In my particular situation I knew that my mistake started with the fact that my plants were dehydrated.  When the sun gets over the house it really starts to bake this part of the land.  I needed irrigation a long time ago, just failed to do anything about it.  I added irrigation and my peppers, tomatoes, and lettuces started looking so much healthier after that.

3.  Be prepared to do something about it

How are you going to do something about the feedback that you have gotten?  I mention how I am going to work over the next year to move plants around and what my plans are to not make these mistakes again.

4.  Plan for the future

In permaculture you have to be prepared to plan for the future.  The future holds a lot for Big Oak Homestead.  I am personally prepared to take my mistakes with pride and learn from those.

Is it too late to start a garden?

is it too late to start a gardenWhen you ask a man why they do not quit the job they have, the two answers that are given are that there has to be a roof over the families head and food on the table.  It is not a big secret that I love to talk about gardening and homesteading.  When I posted a few podcasts that were from last year I had a person that contacted me with a comment. The comment is below.  I did not want to start a conversation about how to start a late garden via twitter, so I did a podcast on it!  Gardens are not hard, just require a little bit of work to get started.  It is not just putting seeds in the ground at this point.  There are some extra steps that you need to take.

Tweet me your show topic ideas!

Is it too late to start a garden?

  • Why this is a manly topic
  • When is the best time to start one
  • How to have the best luck with starting in summer
  • How to have the best luck with starting in winter
  • How can permaculture help with these seasons

Resources used in the show today came from multiple sources throughout my life.  Some of the ideas came from the permaculture course that I took a few months ago, my grandfather, and a few other people that I have looked up to.  It is important to have these kinds of people in your lives that really help to make you a better person.

Permaculture Design Principals – Sectors

Permaculture design principals sectorsMy new fascination with gardening is permaculture.  This set of principals and ideas are ones that make life easier.  I will encourage you and anyone that would listen to me to take permaculture teaching to heart and develop your yard and life around this concept.  Today we are going to talk about sectors.  Sectors in permaculture can be seen as how energy moves.  How does energy move through your property and how can you harness this for your own personal gain.  We are going to go through all of the sectors that I can think of so that we can get a good picture of how not only do these sectors effect your property but how they work together and in harmony.  If you have to ask the question of “why is this a Gentleman concerning topic” you really do not get it.  If you have to ask this question, you need to listen to the end of the podcast!

What are permaculture sectors and why should I care!?

  • What are sectors
  • What do sectors in my property do
  • Discussed sectors:
    • Wind
    • Sunshine
    • Water
    • Storms
    • Wildfire
    • Frost
    • Noise
    • Pollution
  • How is this a topic for gentlemen
    • a rant that most have already heard

Resources used in the show:

All information was learned through a few different resources.  The first one was a introduction to permaculture which was FREE through http://open.oregonstate.edu/courses/permaculture/.  Thank you to Jon Butcher for bringing this class to my attention!

8 Forms Of Capital for Gentlemen

8 forms of capital for gentlemenIn business there is a concept that many people either do not know or they ignore.  They focus on making money or just the financial capital while ignoring the other 7 forms of capital.   A healthy business does not just focus on making money but also by developing all kinds of capital.  Just like in most things that we talk about on this show, it can be be used in another way to help us develop and distinguish ourselves as gentlemen. We can take these forms of capital and look at them in the context of appreciating and raising your family.  Just like in business when raising a family, you are trying to accomplish goals and teach them skills.  With a little bit of understanding we can learn how to better teach our children and take care of our families.  Originally this was an article written for permaculture businesses and it will be mentioned a few times in the podcast.  You can find the article link below in the resources part of the post.

This post was recorded live on Facebook Live.  If you have ever wanted to see what it looks like to record a podcast, keep up with me on Twitter and Facebook and you can see when I plan to start the podcast and an early view before it hits the website!

What are the 8 Forms of Capital?

  • Intellectual
  • Experiential
  • Cultural
  • living
  • Financial
  • Material
  • Social
  • Spiritual
  • What they all mean
  • How they can be used in the home

What I learned from Intro to Permaculture

What i learned in permaculture classPermaculture can mean a lot of things to a lot of different people.  I have spent the past few weeks working on a class that was sent to me from a listener, offered through Oregon State University.  This course was an absolutely amazing course that showed me a completely different way of doing things around my property.  Throughout the month of May I have been learning all about the permaculture principals, ethics, design principals, and basically how to save the world!  Permaculture does not have to completely be the just about plants.  That is the beauty of a design process.  It can also be seen as how to run a business effectively and sustainability.

Keep in mind that four year old Katarina needs our help to purchase a diabetic alert dog.  Her story and how you can help can be found in the podcast where I interviewed her and her parents.  Man Up and donate to her go fund me page.

  • What is it
  • What are the Design Principals
  • What are the Ethics
  • How does permaculture work in both business and in gardens
  • What are the general principals
  • How are trees more useful to us than an annual garden

Resources used in todays show were from what i learned from the course that I took free of charge from the University of Oregon
