Breaking Away from the Pack – Throwback Episode

breaking away from the packIf you ever needed a kick in the ass, today is your show.  In our everyday life we have packs of people that we are forced to interact with.  There is a chance that some of these people are not like us.  There is a chance that some of these people are losers and should be let go.  We need to, as gentlemen, be able to spot this pack and break away from it to be better husbands, fathers, grandfathers, leaders, business owners, and employees.  There are goals to be met and money to be made, what are you doing in your everyday walk to make these dreams come true and to make these goals reality.

Most of the pack that we interact with are not willing to make themselves better and not willing to do more than what they have to do to get the job done, we are not these people.  Remember my challenge to write down your goals and at the bottom destroy your pen by making sure you are clear that its not over until I win.  I mentioned in the show that I am willing to be apart of your pack and was absolutely serious about this.  If you have a goal or a dream and have no one to talk to about it, email me at skilledgentlemen@gmail.com and let me be apart of your pack.  I am appreciative of everyone that contacts me and promise that I am a very approachable person.

What I Wish I Knew In High School – Wednesday Throwback

what i wish i knew in high schoolHigh School, for many people, was one of the hardest things to get through.  For me personally, it was just a major annoyance. I just wanted out with the least amount of damage possible.  People are mean and hateful and try to put you down just so they can feel better about themselves.  Everyone believes that this is the best time in their life.  The problems that they encounter now will be worse than the ones that are to come.  Most of this is nonsense, however we do not speak about this to our children and our young community.  Usually they are the ones that get pushed around and ignored, left to come up with their own views on how reality actually works in the real world.

Hopefully today I will have challenged you to take matters into your own hands and speak with your children about what you wish you knew in high school.  Along with that, take some time to think about what you wish you knew in high school and comment on the Facebook page what you think.

Remember that September is Suicide Awareness Month and we all should see the warning signs of this.  We may not like to think about this but it is not like a gentleman to shy away from things that we dont like to think about.  Learn the signs to help prevent a possible issue in your or your families lives.

Emergencies that Gentlemen should handle – Throwback Episode

emergencies men should know how to handleOne of the scariest things that a man can endure is witnessing emergencies that involve his family.  The blood pressure rises along with the pulse rate and the brain goes into overdrive.  To the normal person the next step would be to freak out and panic.  To the Gentleman however, the next step would be to calm down and start fixing the situation.  This series that I am starting is going to be an accumulation of the most common emergencies that men face on a day to day basis from the standpoint of an experienced first responder.

My goal for these shows is to help men pull themselves together and start being the fixer that his family wants him to be.  Do you want to be that guy that runs around panicking because something just happened to him and his family or do you want to be able to help the situation?

What Emergencies should men be able to handle?

  • what is a first responder

  • What to do if you are in a car wreck

  • How to deal with Major Bleeding
  • Why you do not have to worry about this

Have we lost Rites of Passage? – Throwback Episode

have we lost the rite of passageAcross the world there are cultures have different ways that they ceremonially bring their children into adulthood.  This is called the rite of passage.  However, we live in a world that protects our children and adults from feeling pain and hurt feelings.  Are there ways that we still have rite of passage ceremony?  Are there ways that we can make our children appreciate their place in nature and in society?  My argument is that the struggle has to be hard to make the reward to be sweet.

I dive into the history and the cultural aspects of the rite of passage that still exist today.  I also get real personal with my plans to have my own ceremony for both myself and my son.  The journey should be a struggle because you deserve to feel proud of your accomplishments.  Join in the conversation by getting involved in the social media and on the forum!  You should plan your own passage and have your own journey.

Are you a soft man or a hard gentleman – Throwback Episode

are you a soft manI have been hearing a lot about men being soft here lately.  I sat down to do some research on this phenomenon and came back with the fact that men are becoming really soft.  There is that section of men in the world that have certain attributes about them and have no idea why no one wants to be around them.  People talk bad about them because they are not manning up and taking charge of their responsibilities.  Today’s show is an effort to bring light to this fact and hopefully encourage you to change this out of your life.  To make that effort to go from a soft man to a hard gentleman.  Not only do our families expect it but they deserve to have a hard gentleman in their lives.

Building an Expert Level First Aid Kit – Throwback Episode

building first aid kitMedical emergencies can happen in a heartbeat and to anyone.  Having a first aid kit with you can end up being the difference between that person living or dying.  But understand there is one tool in there that everyone has to have and it absolutely makes or breaks that kit, it is your education.  So as gentlemen we need to take an approach that others have bypassed and shortcut for years and has led to many people being hurt or even made things worse because of the inexperienced.  So tune in today and learn the easy way to make your medical bag the right way and not kill someone during your progress.

Education is no joke.  You have to be trained to make sure that you are doing things correct and at the correct time.  If you give a wrench to someone that does not know how to do plumbing is useless.  Putting the same wrench in the hands of a plumber is a whole different story.  The difference between the two people is the education and experience.  Classes are not hard to find, just look up your local community college or your local YMCA.  They offer classes all of the time.

How do I build an Expert Level First Aid Kit?

  • What I saw at a gun show
  • Likelihood vs. Practical
  • How your education is a key factor in building a medical kit
  • Beginner level items for a medical kit
  • Intermediate level items for a medical kit
  • Advanced level items for a medical kit

Learning from Tough Situations with John

learning through tough situationsLife has a way of throwing tough situations at you, and it is up to you to solve the problem.  My guest today has done just that.  He has been in situations that has required him to be tough and make divisions in a quick fashion.  With what he was taught as a child and his want to make sure that his family was unharmed, he got through these tough scenarios unscathed.  More importantly though is that he learned from these.

Today we are going to be discussing how he handled these situations.  It is up to you to make your own decisions on how you would handle these tough scenarios.  John is a long time listener to the show.  He reached out to me through facebook to talk about these stories.  If you have some stories that you have learned from, please contact me either by email or through social media.

4 Dad Projects for Spring

4 dad projects for springBeing a dad is one of the best jobs in the world.  I know this because my dad and my grandfather done such a great job teaching me life skills throughout my childhood.  With spring just around the corner, it is a great time to get prepared for some projects to teach your children from.  Understand that there is a golden window that last a few years that a child wants to learn from you.  They want to be around you and will learn anything you teach them.  This is the best time to do these projects with them.  They will not only learn from you but they will keep that knowledge for the rest of their lives.

I am going to talk about 4 different projects that you can include your children in this spring.  Projects that will teach them about construction, vehicles, and self sufficiency.  While doing these projects, please be safe.  Teaching them the ability to do something is just as important as keeping them alive.  I included in the podcast what I would use for building materials but if you feel that you should use something different, please do so.  I have no formal education about construction, just a lot of projects under my belt.

What are the projects that a dad can do this spring?

  • The basics of building a swingset
  • Planting a garden
  • Rebuilding a vehicle
  • Vehicle maintenance
