Beer Brewing Basics – Throwback Episode

Beer Brewing BasicsA day that I always look forward to is brewing day.  I say always like I do this all the time and have been for years.  The cruel fact is I just learned how to do this and have only had 2 good turnouts and one bad.  To be honest though, it is not a hard thing to do.  Especially when you start out with the kits.  Remember, this is not an advanced show!  I am certain there are many ways to do this but I have taken the way that gets me started and not spend more than $100 to start learning.  Beer not only breaks down walls and strengthens friendships, it is an essential part of our history.

Brewing beer is really simple to do, as long as you have someone to explain the process and you follow basic sanitation procedures.  Brewing is also relatively cheap to get into because you really only need some basic materials.   So today I am going to have a friendly chit chat about the history of beer and why it is essential in today’s society and about my past brew days!

Skilled Gentlemen Podcast Christmas Special 2016

christmasChristmas is a special time of year for all of us.  It is a time for us to sit around and converse.  A time for us to drink and be merry.  It is a time for gifts and a time for remembrance.  Christmas is filled with history and mythology dating back well before our time and deserves a look.  As gentlemen we should be able to look at history of man and learn, if not just for fun.  As you start your way to bed tonight, I ask you to remember a few things.

Remember the firefighters that are on duty tonight that spend their time away from their family, the police offers that are on duty tonight running down drunk drivers,  EMS is working on keeping people alive in their time of need, and our service members of the military as they spend their time away from family.  Do not take your time for granted, enjoy yourselves and be merry.  I will be looking forward to more podcasts in 2016.

A Look Back at 2016 – What happened in the world, nation, and in my life

look back at 2016Now that 2016 is drawing to an end, a Gentleman needs to jump at the opportunity to look over what has happened.  We have come through a really tough year with all of the riots and the election nonsense that was going on.  As a gentleman you should take the opportunity to look back and see what happened in your own life.  What went right, what went wrong, what you wanted to change, and what changed are all needed to be addressed.

Rather or not you feel like the election went the way that you wanted it to go, you should be optimistic about 2017.  At some point in time you should start thinking about how you want 2017 to be better than 2016.  Then make a plan and stick to it.  Use this next year as an opportunity to be a better you.

What does September 11 mean to a firefighter

what does September 11 mean to a firefighterToday a few years ago we were thrust into a war that no one wanted to be apart of.  It all stemmed from a group of people that had hate in their hearts and decided to attack the United States of America.  Everyone remembers where they were at the time they heard that we were under attack.  Some of us were getting ready for work, some of us were at school getting our day started, 343 firefighters that day were getting their day started having no idea how their day would end.  We all have heard stories of how everyone felt and what firefighters did to help the victims of the attacks, but a story that is not told very often is how the fire service changed in response to the September 11 attacks.

Today as you go about your day, please take the time to stop by a fire station and thank the firefighters there or if you see a police officer at a coffee shop buy their cup of coffee.  No it is not necessary, but a kind gesture is always welcome.  Also take a moment to remember the families that were effected by the September 11 attacks.

Out of respect, there are no ads today

What does September 11 mean to a firefighter?

  • what happened to the service
  • how we changed
  • how we adapted to the changing world

Do not forget that around Christmas 2016 I will be putting a book on the market.  The topic will be covering being an Executive Agent for the Family.  This is a step by step guide to taking your families safety into your own hands.  Making sure that you have done everything possible to keep them safe while you are on trips and out of town.  A lot of the topics covered will be 100% new to you and not mentioned on this podcast!  More details to come later.

Prepping 101- Shelter

prepping 101 shelterYour home is your shelter and your castle.  Take a hot second right now and think about what you would do if your home was taken away from you.  This can be in the form of it burning down, knocked over, blown apart, washed away, or foreclosed on.  All of these are disasters and should be considered apart of your plan to survive just in case something does effect your shelter.  This series I have taken a further look into the five survival needs.  They are food, water, security, energy, and shelter.  I have already spoken on Food and Energy and can be found by clicking on the hyperlinks provided.  Your idea may be that you can hunker down in the woods for an extended period of time or until things go back to normal, but will your family be safe, secure, or warm?  Join me today as we dive into the different aspects of keeping your shelter ready for a disaster.

Keep in mind that four year old Katarina needs our help to purchase a diabetic alert dog.  Her story and how you can help can be found in the podcast where I interviewed her and her parents.  Man Up and donate to her go fund me page.

The Bloody History of the Barber

the history of the barberThere are not many different trades and skills that date back as far as the barber.  I absolutely love going to the barbershop for plenty of reasons ranging from the conversation to the way that I feel when I walk out of the door.  Take a moment to listen to the history and how they got their profession to where it is today.  There are a lot of reasons why I called this show the BLOODY history instead of just the history.  I personally had NO idea that the barber used to also be an amateur surgeon.  What about the pole?  Where did that come from?  Why is it a pole instead of a symbol?  What is with the colors?  Lastly I wanted to discuss how to tip your barber.  Tipping is a big part of keeping a great barber and also a great way to show your appreciation, but I also wanted to highlight the nature of the barber and how they feel about tipping.  If you have a barber, let them know about today’s podcast!

Throwback- Making Your Family Crest

making your family crestThis is a throwback.  It has come to my attention that there are subscribers that have not been exposed to the older podcasts.  While I am in the process of writing my book, Wednesday shows will be dedicated to older shows.  If you have a favorite show, please email me or contact me to let me know.  It can be put in the running for a throwback show.

A family crest is not just nobles and the elite anymore.  Today we can all make family crest that have just as much meaning as we want them to have.  From the people that run the country to the low class that has a full time and part time job just trying to make ends meat.  You do not have to go to the elite and ask for permission to make a crest and you do not have to hire someone to make a crest for you.  All it takes is a little bit of creativity and some time devoted to searching out your history and time learning about what the symbols mean.  This is not just an awesome way to honor your family but a visual reminder of where you came from and that you should keep to your roots.  This is something that your children can be proud of and can save with them for years and generations to come.

HOW DO WE CREATE OUR OWN FAMILY CREST?

  • What are the meanings behind the coat of arms
  • How accurate are those meanings
  • Can we make these ourselves
  • How do we get started doing this
  • Where do I go from here?
