18 Things A Father Should Teach His Son

father teach son
When your son is born, you have just signed up for a job you will be working for the next 18 years of your life.  There are no breaks, there are no days off and you will be responsible for finishing this job rather you like it or not.  Regardless of what has been said, a young man first looks up to his father for guidance.  As a father, you have to step up and be that Gentleman that he needs in his life before he starts to outsource his inspiration to someone else.  That might be someone else that you dont want this outsourced to.  By thinking about this ahead of time and planning out what you want to teach, you will be able to make sure that he knows exactly what you want him to know to succeed in life.

I am not saying that I am an expert on raising children, however I was raised as a child.  I am bringing the experiences and the information that my mentors bestowed upon me as a child.  If you have other ideas about this, please comment and let me know what you taught or would teach your son.

Why Men Need A Farm

Why you want a farmAs a Gentleman, you want a farm.  Plain and simple.  Before you get up in arms about how you don’t have the space or the time to own a farm, you need to listen to this episode.  First off, we measure size in acres and time in minutes.  Farm does not describe these two things.  It describes your acts and your goals.  No matter what you call it (homestead, farmstead, hobby farming) it all means the same thing and does not mean anything about the size.  I didn’t start my farming efforts with land and money.  I actually started with a few researching years and then graduated to containers.  My first break was when I had a patch of dirt that I could call my own.  From there my life has been enriched.

You are not going to be a farmer overnight.  You are not going to want to spend a lot of money upfront on this kind of thing.  Understand that this show is not going to be about how to start one.  You are going to get a lot of “why this matters” today.  If this is confusing, give me the next 45 minutes to light a fire in you to change your mind.

Retirement for Young Gentlemen Part 2/2

Retirement for young gentlemen part 2The last podcast that I did had no answers in it.  Retirement for young gentlemen part 1 was a whole lot of depressing knowledge.  Part 2 has all my answers in it.  I went through everything that I can think of to start preparing for the day that I retire in ways that is harder for the government, economy, or some scum bag to devalue or take away.  These are some of the ultimate goals that I have for my family and myself over the next few decades.  I urge you to think about your own place in today’s financial world and if it is possible for you to retire when you want.  There are ways to do this without the stress of worrying about the economy and the stock market.

In the podcast today I spoke about and told you that I would link in show notes:

How should young gentlemen prepare for retirement

  • How much health insurance should I get
  • How to diversity your stock market portfolio
  • Where to find investment opportunities
  • Assets versus Liabilities
  • Building your own business
  • Viewing your home as an asset
  • How can your home value be brought down and raised
  • Investing in land
  • How to make the land value grow
  • How and where do I prepare to retire
  • The conclusion of the 2 part retirement series

Extending Your Life- Throwback

This show is a throwback.  I understand that my longer listeners may have heard this one before, but you may not have remembered everything that has been said.  Enjoy Extending Your Life!

Extending Your Lifeextending your life is something that has to be taken seriously.  Some of us gentlemen take life for granted everyday because we feel like we are always going to wake up, we are not going to get into a wreck, and we are not going to have a heart attack.  What if I can teach you how to make yourself even less likely to have a heart attack, develop diabetes, or suffer from Alzheimer’s disease?  What if I told you there are people living in other countries that have life spans well beyond 100 years old without major health issues?  Would you be interested?  What if I sweetened the deal by saying you can still drink wine and have fun?  I am not talking about any fad diet or any kind of pill that you can take.  I am talking about making a lifestyle change to extend our lives.

How Do We Extend our Life?

  • Why we should be worried about having long lives
  • What is a blue zone
  • What is the life expediency of blue zone residents
  • What can we do to increase our life
  • How can we be useful in our old age to justify long lives

Gems From Aesop’s Fables

gems from aesop's fablesFrom a child, I have loved listening to Aesop’s Fables.  Those stories have answered so many questions that I had questions about.  My grandparents knew that when I had a disagreement about if I should have to do certain chores, if they told me to just do it that it wouldn’t teach me anything.  However, if they were to tell me a story why, it would change me mind for years to come.  My mother knew that she wanted to teach me a lot as a child.  She knew that Aesop’s Fables were the better stories to read at bedtime because there was always some value to learn from it.  As children we get a lot of our values from the people that are around us everyday.  We grow up learning from our environment.  Adding stories from Aesop’s Fables into everyday life teaches children how to handle difficult situations and helps them to be ready for what life has to throw at them.

What can we learn from Aesop’s Fables?

  • Who is Aesop’s
  • The story of
    • The Ass, Fox, and Lion
    • The Dog and The Wolf
    • The Tree and The Reed
    • The Kid and The Wolf
    • The Ant and The Grasshopper
  • Why these stories from Aesop’s Fables matter
  • How can they be applicable in today’s life

Why Gentlemen Need A Challenge

why gentlemen need a challengeTo keep your mind sharp, as gentlemen, we need a challenge.  The challenge can come from different places and have different angles.  No matter the way it comes, it is the same idea and we have to embrace it.  I mention a few times in the podcast that you have to have a main goal and see your success.  Success has to be defined by you.  No one else can define your success.  Once you have your definition in place you have to construct your challenges to meet your goals without violating your ethics.  This is our topic of discussion today.  Why the challenge is necessary and how to embrace the hard work.

If you decide to listen to the show today you will hear a man that likes the challenge.  The homestead that I have been working to build is a challenge within itself.  Just making it work and working by myself is hard enough.  This does not include the technical work that goes into planning, developing, increasing this, decreasing that, and the weather that impedes process.  As men we should be prepared to meet these challenges with gusto and enthusiasm and welcome the brain workout that it provides.

why do gentlemen need a challenge?

  • keeps your focused on your main goals
  • makes your brain work
  • keeps you young

The reason is because I need to do some reflection and figure out where I want the show to go next year.

Cold Weather Recipes

cold weather recipesThere is no denying that the cold is upon us.  This is the time of year that the darkness starts to overtake the light in their everlasting battle for time in the sky.  Not only are we going to experience shorter days but we are in the prime of the year to have recipes that bring back major traditions.  The concept of traditions can bring someone back in their memories to a time in their lives that made them super happy.  Traditional recipes that make them remember a time that was once an easier time.  Recipes that are not just easy to make and useful to clean out the garden but that have a wonderful taste.  Along with stunning recipes but traditions that make these recipes what they are.  Alone they are just a soup and a stew but with a tradition behind them make it so much more.

Head over to my friends site called Carolina Givens where he has an awesome list of recipes to choose from.  He is not a sponsor but he does deserve some of your love.  Check him out!

What are some cold weather recipes that i should look into?

  • Vegetable Soup
  • Brunswick Stew
  • Why I have these recipes on my list
  • What traditions are related to these recipes
  • Why you should consider bringing these recipes into your traditions

Basics of Astronomy

basics of astronomyThe study of astronomy is is defined as the study of the universe.  How can we bestow the acquisition of knowledge of astronomy to our children?  How can we get them interested in learning and stretching their minds in astronomy concepts?  My idea is getting them involved with astronomy.  My father taught me a little about the universe, or about as much as he could, and from there I started searching and trying to quench a thirst for knowledge that would never stop.  Still today I hear a word or a concept and spend hours learning about it and trying to figure it out because of the time my father spent teaching me about our place in the universe.  There are many different topics and many different concepts that can be discussed but I decided to talk about 3 today.

  • What is light
  • How big is the universe
  • Why did we get rid of Pluto as a planet

I dive into each topic very deep and continue to stretch the limits of your mind and try to convey what little knowledge I have on the subject at hand.  During the research phase I got the blue screen of death.  Luckily for me I was able to restore and get back to work, but this means I need to back my stuff up and get ready for a complete meltdown.  So little to no resources available for you to click on, but I did my best to remember what I found.

Also if you liked today’s topic and would like to hear more about this, please let me know because I would love to do more topics about this kind of stuff.
