What I learned from Intro to Permaculture

What i learned in permaculture classPermaculture can mean a lot of things to a lot of different people.  I have spent the past few weeks working on a class that was sent to me from a listener, offered through Oregon State University.  This course was an absolutely amazing course that showed me a completely different way of doing things around my property.  Throughout the month of May I have been learning all about the permaculture principals, ethics, design principals, and basically how to save the world!  Permaculture does not have to completely be the just about plants.  That is the beauty of a design process.  It can also be seen as how to run a business effectively and sustainability.

Tree Planting 101

Tree planting 101In no way shape or form is there a stock that is 100% able to increase your profits 10 fold, and if there is you need to punch that guy in the face for lying to you.  I can guarantee you that a tree can though.  Ignoring the fact that a tree will help you be more self reliant and give you free calories from delicious non chemically drowned fruit, there are so many benefits to planting a tree.  I am going to spend the podcast today teaching you all about the benefits of tree planting and busting those myths that people have come up with about it.  It could not be simpler and it could not be more benificial for the environment.  Not to mention how much value that could bring to your life and the life of your family.  Use this summer to find a great place to plant and get started.

How To Start Homesteading

how to start homesteadingHomesteading is no easy task.  Of course no one ever said that homesteading would be easy work.  I started my research and started my journey to this about 5 years ago.  It began with my desire to be more self reliant and to be able to provide for my family.  If you ever wanted to do any homesteading, now is the time to start.  Spring is in the air and the plants are waiting to be put in the ground.  Now is the time to start getting sweaty and no is the time to start getting dirty.  Consider this though, what happens when you want to put in chickens over here and it turns out that area floods?  What if you wanted to put your garden in this area but the wildlife hangs out in that area?  You have to think this through, otherwise you are going to resent listening to this podcast and stop trying to grow something.  Today you are going to get MY blueprints on how I planned out my homestead and the steps for you to do the same.

Join me today as I instruct you on how to start homesteading.

Creating Your Oasis

creating your own oasis

Every gentleman has to have their own place to relax and call their Oasis.  Their own spot to sit down and forget about what stresses them out, even if only for a few moments in life.  Every gentleman has to be able to remember what really matters in their life and it can not be done by being unhealthy and stressed all the time.  This is why every gentleman needs to have their own oasis.  The idea of an oasis can be molded into whatever you want it to be, from being out in the woods to being downtown in a city.  There are a few elements that have to be established before we can call it “your oasis” but those are not hard to figure out.  Consider making or finding your oasis before you have your next stressful day at work where your blood pressure is sky rocketed and your about to murder someone.

How do you create your own oasis

  • Why having this matters
  • How to find your own
  • What are the elements that you have to establish before you call it your oasis
  • What an outdoor small lot oasis look like
  • What a large yard would look like
  • What an indoor would look like
  • What about if you live where you can not build one
    • where do you find one
  • Why posting this on the Facebook page could help others

Modern Day Homesteading

Modern Day HomesteadingHomesteading is an art that keeps the family healthy.  Modern day homesteading is doing the same thing, but by yourself and continue to have a career.  This is important for people like us in this time and day.  It is also important for the small scale homesteader living in urban areas.  If you are anything like me, you have less and less time but want more done in your day.  With all the small things that will end up adding up in a total day our day will slowly be completely filled.  With this problem in mind we can start modernizing our homesteads.  Everything get engineered to work by itself and your animals and crops get their needs met.  Now you have plenty of food and your small business can run, almost by itself.  Do I have your interest peaked?

What is modern day homesteading and how to we do it

  • how can modern day homesteading make you money
  • the upfront work involved in modern day homesteading
  • why this all matters

Remember that I am taking the last 2 weeks off of December from the podcast.  I will still have Email service, and I will be on the Facebook page.  I am just taking time away from the show.  The reason is because I need to do some reflection and figure out where I want the show to go next year.

Building A Pharmacy Garden

building a pharmacy gardenThe last podcast that I gave you was pretty harsh with how blunt everything was.  A gentleman should know the way things actually work around here.  One big thing that you should know how to do is take care of yourself.  This is what I had in mind when talking about a pharmacy garden.  It does not seem like there is much on the interwebs that has to do with a pharmacy garden.  This is not like the podcast I did a few months back which dealt with 11 herbs that you should add to your yard this year.  That podcast spoke about a bunch of plants to add to your meals and how they are good for you.  This pharmacy garden podcast is more about an immediate effect.  So you just got a minor cut while chopping onions.  Instead of getting the chemicals out heal you faster, just go to your pharmacy garden to heal the cut.  Understand that I am not a doctor so do not take this as, “I have a tree impaling my stomach, Clay said to get this plant to help” but go to a doctor to fix that.  But small cuts and burns, you do not need a doctor… just saying.

Vermicomposting 101

vermicomposting 101We, as Americans, waste 1/3 of the total amount of food that is grown every year.  We spend a lot of money on that to the amount of 168 BILLION dollars every year.  At the same time we spend a massive amount of money on fertilizer for our gardens and for our lawn.  What if we could use a worm to turn our food scraps into fertilizer without using harsh chemicals and in the same hand, saving a literal crap ton of money.  Vermicomposting is the best way to do this.  By buying a few little worms you can turn your lawn and garden into a chemical free area and reduce the likelihood of your children getting sick from the chemicals.  Vermicomposting is easy and effective.  That is today topic.  You can pretty much consider this the one stop podcast to get your vermicomposting on!

how do we start vermicomposting?

    • what is vermicomposting
    • how do we start
    • how can we make money off this venture
    • why does this matter
    • how can we change our world by one species of worm

Preparing for a fall garden

preparing for a fall gardenWhen we step out of the house in the morning we all feel how winter is winning back the day.  Fall is in our soon future and we should think about preparing for a fall garden.Fall gardening is a wonderful way to up your gardening game.  You can plant the things that just dont make it during the summer months.  This also gives you a last ditch chance to get some money out of the ground before everything goes to sleep for the winter.   There are many things that we can plant and many ways to keep our pants safe when old man frost hits our gardens from erecting a greenhouse to cutting apart milk jugs and placing them over the plants plus many more ways to “hack” your garden (lol).  So break out your garden trough and get ready to dig up a garden and plant some awesome tasting vegetables.

So what should I look forward to hearing about having a fall garden?

  • how do we figure out when to plant what
  • does it really matter if we stay 100% in line with that date
  • what should be planted in gardens now
  • what are some recipes that will blow minds
  • ideas to expand our grow season beyond first frost
  • When should we plant trees
  • How do we plant trees
  • why do gentlemen care about this stuff

Extending Your Life

extending your lifeExtending Your Life is something that has to be taken seriously.  Some of us gentlemen take life for granted everyday because we feel like we are always going to wake up, we are not going to get into a wreck, and we are not going to have a heart attack.  What if I can teach you how to make yourself even less likely to have a heart attack, develop diabetes, or suffer from Alzheimer’s disease?  What if I told you there are people living in other countries that have life spans well beyond 100 years old without major health issues?  Would you be interested?  What if I sweetened the deal by saying you can still drink wine and have fun?  I am not talking about any fad diet or any kind of pill that you can take.  I am talking about making a lifestyle change to extend your life.

How Do We Extend our Life?

  • Why we should be worried about having a long life
  • What is a blue zone
  • What is the life expediency of blue zone residents
  • What can we do to increase our life
  • How can we be useful in our old age to justify a long life
