Emergencies Men Should Know How To Handle Pt2

emergencies men should know how to handleOne of the scariest things that a man can endure is witnessing emergencies that involve his family.  The blood pressure rises along with the pulse rate and the brain goes into overdrive.  To the normal person the next step would be to freak out and panic.  To the Gentleman however, the next step would be to calm down and start fixing the situation.

This series that I am starting is going to be an accumulation of the most common emergencies that men face on a day to day basis from the standpoint of an experienced first responder.  My goal for these shows is to help men pull themselves together and start being the fixer that his family wants him to be.  Do you want to be that guy that runs around panicking because something just happened to him and his family or do you want to be able to help the situation?

If you have not already, check out part 1 of this mini series found HERE.

Best Apps To Stay Connected While Seperated

best apps to stay connected while seperatedWe all have that time in our lives that we are forced to be in a separate location than our families.  None of us enjoy having to do this, but it is apart of being in a world that is in constant motion.  This does not give us the excuse to allow ourselves to close our eyes to what could effect them.  We have the ability to download certain apps to our phones to alert us when something is going on where our family is located.  These apps can push notify you when there are storms, riots, or other emergencies that you should know about.  Make sure you are doing the gentleman thing and keep track of what is happening around your family instead of just hoping that nothing will happen.

The apps that are mentioned in the show today are not in any way affiliated by Skilled Gentlemen Podcast.  Please understand that these are suggestions and you should use them at your own will.

How A Medic Deals With A Snakebite

how a medic deals with a snakebiteAround the world, every single day, someone gets a snakebite.  Rather or not the snake is poisonous or if the possibly poisonous snake actually put venom in you can be figured out later at the hospital.  I am not going to discuss how to figure out the snake but what you should do if it happens.  This is an emergency medical situation that has to be understood because it could potentially be a life threatening situation.  A snakebite can happen in a split second and the first thing that people what do to is run away.  Wrong.  Then they want to use some ancient and outdated information about how to deal with the snakebite like cutting and sucking out the venom.  Wrong.  So what are you supposed to do?  Listen to the podcast today where I, as a trained medic, explain what I would do in this situation and then what the experts say to do.  Along with this life saving information you really need to learn about some misconceptions that people have about snakes.  We do have to make sure we are taking care of our ecosystems and learn how to interact in our environments.  Also I wanted to throw in some “Gee-whiz” information.  I really think you will enjoy the show today and also learn how to keep you and your family save through the summer.

Prepping 101- Shelter

prepping 101 shelterYour home is your shelter and your castle.  Take a hot second right now and think about what you would do if your home was taken away from you.  This can be in the form of it burning down, knocked over, blown apart, washed away, or foreclosed on.  All of these are disasters and should be considered apart of your plan to survive just in case something does effect your shelter.  This series I have taken a further look into the five survival needs.  They are food, water, security, energy, and shelter.  I have already spoken on Food and Energy and can be found by clicking on the hyperlinks provided.  Your idea may be that you can hunker down in the woods for an extended period of time or until things go back to normal, but will your family be safe, secure, or warm?  Join me today as we dive into the different aspects of keeping your shelter ready for a disaster.

The Basic Firearm Collection

basic firearm collectionWith all of the possible choices for purchasing a firearm in the world, where would you start?  Today I have assembled, in my humble opinion, the basic list of firearms that I feel that everyone that enjoys firearms should own.  But why would you only want a basic collection instead of a massive collection?  I addressed that also with the sobering fact that you not only need a firearm but you will need ammo and training.  In my opinion training is well under stressed considering what you are carrying, but training is not the topic of today’s show.  If you have a different opinion of what the basic firearm collection should be, please meet me on the Skilled Gentlemen Podcast Forum to have a gentleman’s discussion on the topic.

Making Your Home More Private

making your home more privateIn a world that is obsessed with everyone knowing what they are eating, where they are going, and who they are with the possibility of crime occurrence because of it is a lot higher.  As Gentlemen we should be more aware of what we are putting out to the world instead of being worried that our friends know when we are cutting the grass.  With the rise of business that will monitor your credit and make sure that no one has stolen your identity, it makes one wonder, is there anything that we could be doing to make our homes more private?  Maybe just the addition of a few bushes will keep the neighbors from complaining that there is a tomato plant in the back yard.  What if I told you that a private yard and a private home is more valuable than a home that is in the wide open to most buyers.  With all of this being the case, we should consider taking steps to safeguard our family in many different ways that will in turn make our homes safer and more private.

How To Survive A Dog Attack

surviving a dog attackThere may never be a time in which you need this information.  You may never find yourself in a situation where a dog is going to attack you or your family.  As gentlemen we should not shy away from information just because we don’t think it could happen, but we are prepared if it does happen.  I debated on even doing this show.  The reason is because I do not want to shine a negative spotlight on dogs.  However, I do feel like this could save someone’s life or save someone from an emergency room one day.  Remember, dogs are not bad, people are bad and train dogs to be bad.  Most of the reasons why we are bitten is because we did something wrong.  It is up to us to make sure that we are able to spot their body language and understand what they are trying to tell us.  With this bit of information, we could save thousands of trips to the emergency room every year.  There are some situations that are unavoidable.  Some situations where you are going to be bit, this is the topic of the show today.

How do you survive a dog attack

    • what kind of signs should we notice before a bite
    • why do dogs bite
    • what situations are more likely to result in a bite
    • if you find youself in a situation you can’t get out of
      • how do you reduce your likelihood of needing medical attention

Situational Awareness – What is it and how to develop it

situational awareness what is it and how to develop itSituational awareness is something that we all have some amount of.  Some are hyper aware, where we are always tuned into what is going on in a room.  Some are hypo aware, where they are clueless to what is happening around them.  You have all seen the people that have no clue what is going on because of the facespace pages they are addicted to.  The goal of the show today is to make sure that you know what situational awareness is.  If I could boil down the concept to a single idea, it could save your life.  The second goal is to help you develop it.  From remembering where you left your keys to remembering where you made the turn on this long road, situational awareness is your go-to tool for everyday life.  As gentlemen we should always be looking to increase our skills, especially one that is so beneficial for our families.  Join me as I give you some exercises to help you be more aware and more ready to react to emergencies.

How are we going to develop our situational awareness?

  • What is Situational Awareness?
  • Why should we consider developing it
  • What kind of purpose does it serve?
  • What does it look like when someone has it
  • What does it look like when someone doesn’t have it
  • How do we increase our Situational Awareness

How To Find Prepping Gaps

how to find your prepping gapsA prepping gap is where you wish you had something but didn’t know you needed it.  We all have them and we all need the light shined on them.  There are plenty of ways to find these.  First off you can listen to shows that are dedicated to prepping.  These will tell you what to put in your kits.  To me this is not very useful.  I want to know why and where they will be used.  I also want to know what is the rate of return these have in my life.  The best way that I found to do this is to run different scenarios.  Cut the power off and see what you really need.  This shows a lot more than a list of stuff you should have.  Your family will be in better shape when you for having these things figured out ahead of time instead of day of.

How do we find our prepping gaps?

    • Lite version
    • Certain scenarios
    • Heavy version
    • Why you should find your prepping gaps
    • How you analyze the prepping gaps
