Different Ways To Cook A Turkey

Different ways to cook a turkey

Some people think that it is easy to cook a turkey.  Turkey cooking can be both a headache and an art.  There are literately hundreds of ways to cook a turkey from the microwave to the deep fryer.  All of which turn out to be great, if done right.  So my question to you is, how do you cook your turkey for thanksgiving?  There is always some safety that you should consider with certain ways.  One big thing is not to burn your house down!  You do have to be aware that your turkey can get really dry.  Take preventive steps to keep yourself from being the dry turkey guy.  My go to way right now is to buy a bag to put it in.  This effectively steams it instead of drying it out.

Remember what the season is all about though.  It is not necessarily about cooking and eating as much as the company that the meal is enjoyed with.  So invite everyone that you feel should be there and then add a few friends.

What are some different ways to cook a turkey?

  • Deep Fry
  • Bag
  • Turducken
  • Grilled
  • Smoked

Cold Weather Recipes

cold weather recipesThere is no denying that the cold is upon us.  This is the time of year that the darkness starts to overtake the light in their everlasting battle for time in the sky.  Not only are we going to experience shorter days but we are in the prime of the year to have recipes that bring back major traditions.  The concept of traditions can bring someone back in their memories to a time in their lives that made them super happy.  Traditional recipes that make them remember a time that was once an easier time.  Recipes that are not just easy to make and useful to clean out the garden but that have a wonderful taste.  Along with stunning recipes but traditions that make these recipes what they are.  Alone they are just a soup and a stew but with a tradition behind them make it so much more.

Head over to my friends site called Carolina Givens where he has an awesome list of recipes to choose from.  He is not a sponsor but he does deserve some of your love.  Check him out!

Bringing Home Fire Department Values

bringing home fire department valuesA lot of your career fire departments are ran like little families.  We cook together, sleep under the same roof, laugh, and learn together.  A lot of the things that we do during our week and the things that we do every year are things that we can all do around our homes.  This helps with structure and helps to be constant with everything.  I try my hardest to make sure that we clean the house once a week.  Well now that I have a day devoted to cleaning the house, I do it every Friday.  This is a great way to make sure that we get things done.  Along with that, we have traditions that we make sure are done every year.  We all look forward to doing them and have a great time with it.  My suggestion is to consider your own traditions and create your own values out of this short list.

Bringing home fire department values

    • cook together
      • eat together
    • friday cleanup
    • saturday maintenance
    • buy good equipment
      • care for it
    • we look out for each other
      • don’t let each other get hurt
      • keep each other looking nice
      • teach each other

Raising Chickens

raising chickensChickens are essential to the homestead.  From their bug eating skills (yes they have skills!) to their ability to turn unwanted scraps of food into awesome fertilizer, chickens are very useful to us.  Today I am going to talk about raising chickens from a chick to the dinner plate.  To most of us, chickens have a useful life span.  Once they get outside of that lifespan they graduate to the freezer.  There are good ways for a first time butcher and ways that I do not agree with, but can be done.  The reason why I am doing this show today is because I am culling a few chickens tomorrow.  This will end up being an emotional time because I am not heartless, but to keep true to the homesteading way I am going to go through with it.

if you have ever thought about raising chickens, today is your show!

  • Why keeping livestock is a very important piece in the homestead
  • Having the homesteader mindset
  • What do you need for a chick to come home
  • Preparing an area for chickens
  • What to feed them
  • How long before they produce anything
  • Culling them
  • How to use everything
  • How to keep a rotating stock

How To Get Rid Of Gnats

how to get rid of gnatsMy house gets gnats in it from time to time and is completely annoying to the point in which I refuse to cook because they keep landing on the meal.  So after calling up my grandmother and talking to her for a while she gave me a great recipe for a cheap way to trap gnats.  This is safe for children to be around and if something happens and it spills on the floor, your dog will not die from drinking it.  You can go on Pinterest and find thousands of ways to kill gnats and they may or may not work just depending on how much you are willing to spend.  Here is the cheapest, and most effective way that I have found to trap gnats.

Recipe:

  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 pump of liquid soap

Yes you read that right, that is all it takes to make an effective solution to attract gnats and then to kill them.  I am not going to sit here and tell you that I know the chemistry or physics of why it traps gnats but what I am saying is that it works really well.

How to use it:

Pour some Apple Cider Vinegar in a small container to however much you plan to make.  You really do not have to make much at all, just enough to make a smell.  Then add a single pump of liquid soap and stir to mix.  Sit these around the kitchen and gnats will be attracted to the smell of the Apple Cider Vinegar.

I have made a network of these around the house in certain areas to trap more gnats.  I place the trap near doors, windows, in the pantry and beside the refrigerator.  Along with being clean around the kitchen has really helped us keep our home rid of those horrible little buggers.

Cooking Basics for a Man

2692476103_0a0eb0d3eeCooking is a skill that has been over complicated and under appreciated for the past few years, but yet everyone wants you to start cooking.  When watching infomercials and sales pitches they will proclaim that you can throw out your entire kitchen for their product and then the next person says the same thing.  I submit to you that you can cook pretty much anything with a few products and it wont cost you 7 easy payments of $19.99!  To be a kitchen master you have to start out with the basics which is what today’s show is about.  Understand that if you are already a master in the kitchen, most of the show will be a little bit boring but the middle to ending we start getting into more advanced concepts, so hang in there.  During the show I mentioned how to grow your own food to help lower your cost of cooking, check out the show titled Gardening Like A Gent.

Join me today as we talk about:

  • Why this matters to a gentleman
  • How you will be healthier by doing this
  • How you will save money
  • How this will bring you closer to your spouse
  • A list of basic tools that you need
  • Some advanced/time saving/ easier tools
  • Basic concepts
  • 4 simple recipes you can try yourself for under $16 per plate

I mentioned a website during the show, check out the article about How Much Money Can You Save Without Eating Out from Out Of Your Rut dot com.
