I am starting a craft beer of the week review. Every week I am going to try a different beer every week. This can be a review of a different beer even though it is from the same brewery. The reason why… The same brew masters can come up with different chemistry and create different works of art.
Here is what I thought. Personally I am not a huge fan of canned beers. I do feel like there is a small “off” taste that the can gives the beer and glass really does a lot to preserve the taste of the beer. I also feel like the can looses its temperature faster than glass so the beer needs to be drank faster. Not really sure of the science that could go along with this, just something that I think about.
When I popped the top of the can I did get a great pressure release with a nose that smelled of hops, nuts, and a hint of fruit. The smell is not overpowering like some beers that you can smell from another room. The nose lasts throughout the entire beer and not trail off during the middle.
Most will agree that the pour sets the taste of the beer. Think of it this way, if you pour and have a small head you will have a lower carbonation beer with a higher alcohol content leading to a heaver beer or one that would be enjoyed in the autumn or winter. The larger the head will give you a higher carbonation taste with a lower alcohol content leading to a lighter beer or one that would be enjoyed in the spring or summer. This pour gave a medium head which lead to a beer that made me feel like it was going to be great in the spring.
ShotGun Betty has a mixture of tastes. When you start out you get a rush of complex flavor ranging of malt and hops but not what you would expect from a normal beer. The taste that sets this beer separate from all other beers is the dry finish. One one the more exotic beer tastes that I have experienced. Usually the description of “dry finish” is reserved for dry wines but somehow they have incorporated this aspect into their beer. Being that it is a Hefenweizen brew it’s sugars are derived from wheat and barley. You can definitely tell the difference between this Hefenweizen ale and other ales.
The look of this Hefenweizen Ale is one that is to be desired. I have always been drawn to the unfiltered beers. To anyone that brews beer, there is a decision that has to be made. To filter or not to filter. You can see in the above picture that this beer has a slight cloud to it. To some this may be off putting, but to me this means that the taste is more robust.
What is my overall feel of ShotGun Betty?
Overall, I really do like this unique beer and would pass around to my friends or guests on a spring day. It is light enough to not be a meal by itself but heavy enough to still give you that pause in between the sips. If you ever have the opportunity to try this beer out, I would encourage you to indulge.
