Permaculture Principals- Accept Feedback

permaculture principals accept feedbackThere is a new video on YouTube that you must watch on how I am using Permaculture Principals in my own yard to accept feedback.  I have made some mistakes in this process and need to address this.  I am not going to pretend that I know everything which is why permaculture does such a good job teaching us.  My front yard is a complete mess and it is my job to fix that.  I have planted things in the wrong places and now have to make sure that I fix those issues.

The steps that you should follow to accept feedback:

  1. Understand that you are not infallible and can make mistakes

You can do this by taking a step back and looking at what is going on.  In my case when I stood back I realized that my vision for the land was not what was reality.  After I finished being mad about the whole thing, I was able to accept that there were mistakes.  This is where you have to be ready to accept feedback and ready to listen to the land.

2.   Understand why this was a mistake

In my particular situation I knew that my mistake started with the fact that my plants were dehydrated.  When the sun gets over the house it really starts to bake this part of the land.  I needed irrigation a long time ago, just failed to do anything about it.  I added irrigation and my peppers, tomatoes, and lettuces started looking so much healthier after that.

3.  Be prepared to do something about it

How are you going to do something about the feedback that you have gotten?  I mention how I am going to work over the next year to move plants around and what my plans are to not make these mistakes again.

4.  Plan for the future

In permaculture you have to be prepared to plan for the future.  The future holds a lot for Big Oak Homestead.  I am personally prepared to take my mistakes with pride and learn from those.

Retirement for Young Gentlemen Part 2/2

Retirement for young gentlemen part 2The last podcast that I did had no answers in it.  Retirement for young gentlemen part 1 was a whole lot of depressing knowledge.  Part 2 has all my answers in it.  I went through everything that I can think of to start preparing for the day that I retire in ways that is harder for the government, economy, or some scum bag to devalue or take away.  These are some of the ultimate goals that I have for my family and myself over the next few decades.  I urge you to think about your own place in today’s financial world and if it is possible for you to retire when you want.  There are ways to do this without the stress of worrying about the economy and the stock market.

In the podcast today I spoke about and told you that I would link in show notes:

How should young gentlemen prepare for retirement

  • How much health insurance should I get
  • How to diversity your stock market portfolio
  • Where to find investment opportunities
  • Assets versus Liabilities
  • Building your own business
  • Viewing your home as an asset
  • How can your home value be brought down and raised
  • Investing in land
  • How to make the land value grow
  • How and where do I prepare to retire
  • The conclusion of the 2 part retirement series

Retirement for Young Gentlemen Part 1/2

retirement for young gentlemen part 1To a young gentleman, retirement cannot be further from a reality.  For some of us we have years before we ever have to start thinking about it.  Today I am going to convince you that you should be concerned about it.  We take a quick look through history of the U.S. economy and how retirement was effected by it.  This matters to us.  Rather you like it or not a lot of people have their retirement tied up along side of the economy in the form of stocks in their 401K.  There are people in the world that will rob, cheat, and steal your money from you.  We, as gentlemen, need to have a way to keep our retirement from slipping out of our hands.

Make sure you look out for part 2 of the podcast.  I will be talking about how to make sure that you have money when you retire.  This will be alternative ways to acquire money and assets over time to make sure that you have some ready for retirement.

Why should we be planning for our retirement as young men?

  • We look back over the past 30 years of our economy
  • Focus on what happened in 2008 when so many people lost their retirement
  • How our 401K, pension, 403b, and IRA is linked to the economy
  • How do we normally plan to retire
  • What can you do within your normal retirement plans
  • What is to come for part 2 of the podcast

Your First Beer Brew

your first beer brewBrewing beer is not a hard but it can be intimidating to do.  In partnership with HopGoblin I have put together a basic guide to brewing your first batch of beer.  This guide is meant to break down how easy it is to make beer with the right kit and with the right ingredient kit.  I make sure to add in all of my tips and tricks to make sure that you have a successful brew day.

A lot of the homebrew clubs and forms that are around the internet does a really awesome job of getting over your head.  When I started my first brew I was very nervous about all this math that I needed to do and all of the acronyms that I needed to memorize that I messed it up.  I didnt have videos like this that could have made it so much easier to understand and enjoy.  This is why we came together to bring you this series.

This is a video series that goes step by step through the brew day and then day by day through the rest of the process.   Once you are finished with this series you can go to the store, buy you equipment and ingredient kit, and work through each video from brew day to the day you open your first brew.

To make your first brew you will need:

How much does brewing beer cost?

Depending on which recipe kit you go with depends on your total cost for your first brew.  However, we need to break down the cost over the total amount of beer that you will get from a 5 gallon kit.  On average you will get 50 beers out of 5 gallons of beer.  (Your equipment kit + Recipe Kit) /50 beers = 3.62 per beer for the expensive kit or 3.08 per beer for the cheapest kit.  Keep in mind that you pay $4.00 per beer at most bars.  From then on your cost for a craft is cheaper than what you can buy at a grocery store.  You can average a cost between $1.02 and $0.48 per craft.

If you can make a meal with the use of a recipe and not burn your house down, kill yourself or your dog you can brew beer!  This video series proves it.  I do not go into any kind of tests involved, I do not mention specific gravity or temperatures needed because you do not need to know this yet.  You are a beginner, enjoy the process of making homebrew.

The Internet is down! Now what?

So with recent storms that have come through, our internet has been lost. I will make every effort to make sure I bring you a show on Monday but understand that if I don’t have anything but 4g service, not many other places do to. If it is the case that I cannot bring you a show on Monday, I will back log the show for later this week. Regurdless you will get a podcast for Monday!

Have We Lost The Rite of Passage

have we lost the rite of passageAcross the world there are cultures have different ways that they ceremonially bring their children into adulthood.  This is called the rite of passage.  However, we live in a world that protects our children and adults from feeling pain and hurt feelings.  Are there ways that we still have rite of passage ceremony?  Are there ways that we can make our children appreciate their place in nature and in society?  My argument is that the struggle has to be hard to make the reward to be sweet.  I dive into the history and the cultural aspects of the rite of passage that still exist today.  I also get real personal with my plans to have my own ceremony for both myself and my son.  The journey should be a struggle because you deserve to feel proud of your accomplishments.  Join in the conversation by getting involved in the social media and on the forum!  What do you think should be a journey or how are you planning your own?

Emergencies Men Should Know How To Handle

emergencies men should know how to handleOne of the scariest things that a man can endure is witnessing emergencies that involve his family.  The blood pressure rises along with the pulse rate and the brain goes into overdrive.  To the normal person the next step would be to freak out and panic.  To the Gentleman however, the next step would be to calm down and start fixing the situation.  This series that I am starting is going to be an accumulation of the most common emergencies that men face on a day to day basis from the standpoint of an experienced first responder.  My goal for these shows is to help men pull themselves together and start being the fixer that his family wants him to be.  Do you want to be that guy that runs around panicking because something just happened to him and his family or do you want to be able to help the situation?

What kind of emergencies should men know how to handle?

  • what is a first responder
  • why should I keep a medical bag in my car
  • what should be kept in the medical bag
  • How to deal with a car wreck
  • How to deal with Hypothermia
  • How to deal with Hyperthermia
  • How to deal with Major Bleeding
  • Why you do not have to worry about this

Is it too late to start a garden?

is it too late to start a gardenWhen you ask a man why they do not quit the job they have, the two answers that are given are that there has to be a roof over the families head and food on the table.  It is not a big secret that I love to talk about gardening and homesteading.  When I posted a few podcasts that were from last year I had a person that contacted me with a comment. The comment is below.  I did not want to start a conversation about how to start a late garden via twitter, so I did a podcast on it!  Gardens are not hard, just require a little bit of work to get started.  It is not just putting seeds in the ground at this point.  There are some extra steps that you need to take.

Tweet me your show topic ideas!

Is it too late to start a garden?

  • Why this is a manly topic
  • When is the best time to start one
  • How to have the best luck with starting in summer
  • How to have the best luck with starting in winter
  • How can permaculture help with these seasons

Resources used in the show today came from multiple sources throughout my life.  Some of the ideas came from the permaculture course that I took a few months ago, my grandfather, and a few other people that I have looked up to.  It is important to have these kinds of people in your lives that really help to make you a better person.
