Spotting and Stopping Someone From Drowning

drowning spotting it and stopping itIt is really hot around my area right now and people everywhere are finding ways to beat the heat! For a lot more of us this means that swimming pools are opening up for the summer and this means that people of all ages go for a swim.  Growing up we have all learned that drowning meant looking a certain way and we were to always call the lifeguard to help.  What if I told you drowning didn’t look like the way we were supposed to see it look like.  What if I told you to save a drowning person wont be as easy as we see on TV.  There are a lot of reasons why people don’t necessarily drown like they are supposed to.  This is where I am stepping in today.

Over the next week all of the shows will be throwbacks.  I will be on vacation allowing my brain to relax and taking some time off to be with my friends and my family.  While I am away, I will be using the social media outlets and answering emails.  Thank you for understanding and I look forward to bringing you more awesome content with a fresh mind.

  • First, what is memorial day and what do we remember on this day
  • The short version of the article Drowning Does Not Look Like Drowning
  • My background in lifeguarding
  • My rescues while lifeguarding
  • Reach, Throw, and Go

  • How to approach a drowning victim
  • Differences between drowning victims
  • How to escape the grasp of an active drowning victim
  • What to do at shore

If you have not checked out the CPR or Medical Pt. 1 shows, give them a listen to.  I compound on the subject in the show.

Camping Like A Gentleman – A Throwback

camping like a gentlemanIf you have never been camping you have not lived yet.   Being outside for a full 24 hours or longer is intoxicating by itself.  You learn a lot about yourself and discover things that you have never known about yourself.  Camping is a learning experience for children by expanding their interests and their imaginations.  Going back to when my grandfather and father took me out to camp as a child brings back memories that I will never forget.  However there is a right and a wrong way to camp.  You cannot just get the family together and run out deep into the woods.  More than likely the people going will not have a very good time.  Start out slow and take things step by step and then work your way up to an enjoyable summer vacation with the family!

Over the next week I will be posting throwback episodes.  The reasoning behind this is two fold.  First is that I am out of the office, however I will still be answering emails, messages, and tweets just at a slower pace.  The second reason is because the new listeners that come to the show each week have not had a chance to see older episodes.  This leaves me in a great position to let older episodes run the podcast for the next few days.  Thank you for understanding.

4 Things You Should Know Before Visiting The Beach

4 things you should know before visiting the beachEvery year millions of people visit the beach for their yearly vacation.  Most people that visit the beach will do it during the summer which is why I have waited until now to do a show related to the subject.  Most of us Gentlemen make sure that we are prepared before we go however there may be a few things that you forgot.  The list that I have prepared for your listening pleasure has a lot to do with safety and then the last part is me stepping into the “Dont Be That Guy” mode where I rip into personal pet peeves that people do at the beach.  The show today is meant to be light hearted and somewhat comical with a touch of information to keep you and your family safe this summer when you go on vacation.

How A Medic Deals With A Snakebite

how a medic deals with a snakebiteAround the world, every single day, someone gets a snakebite.  Rather or not the snake is poisonous or if the possibly poisonous snake actually put venom in you can be figured out later at the hospital.  I am not going to discuss how to figure out the snake but what you should do if it happens.  This is an emergency medical situation that has to be understood because it could potentially be a life threatening situation.  A snakebite can happen in a split second and the first thing that people what do to is run away.  Wrong.  Then they want to use some ancient and outdated information about how to deal with the snakebite like cutting and sucking out the venom.  Wrong.  So what are you supposed to do?  Listen to the podcast today where I, as a trained medic, explain what I would do in this situation and then what the experts say to do.  Along with this life saving information you really need to learn about some misconceptions that people have about snakes.  We do have to make sure we are taking care of our ecosystems and learn how to interact in our environments.  Also I wanted to throw in some “Gee-whiz” information.  I really think you will enjoy the show today and also learn how to keep you and your family save through the summer.

How does a medic deal with a snakebite?

    • What are the most dangerous snakes around the world
    • How do you keep from getting bit
    • How do you treat a snake bite in the field

Permaculture Design Principals – Sectors

Permaculture design principals sectorsMy new fascination with gardening is permaculture.  This set of principals and ideas are ones that make life easier.  I will encourage you and anyone that would listen to me to take permaculture teaching to heart and develop your yard and life around this concept.  Today we are going to talk about sectors.  Sectors in permaculture can be seen as how energy moves.  How does energy move through your property and how can you harness this for your own personal gain.  We are going to go through all of the sectors that I can think of so that we can get a good picture of how not only do these sectors effect your property but how they work together and in harmony.  If you have to ask the question of “why is this a Gentleman concerning topic” you really do not get it.  If you have to ask this question, you need to listen to the end of the podcast!

What are permaculture sectors and why should I care!?

  • What are sectors
  • What do sectors in my property do
  • Discussed sectors:

8 Forms Of Capital for Gentlemen

8 forms of capital for gentlemenIn business there is a concept that many people either do not know or they ignore.  They focus on making money or just the financial capital while ignoring the other 7 forms of capital.   A healthy business does not just focus on making money but also by developing all kinds of capital.  Just like in most things that we talk about on this show, it can be be used in another way to help us develop and distinguish ourselves as gentlemen. We can take these forms of capital and look at them in the context of appreciating and raising your family.  Just like in business when raising a family, you are trying to accomplish goals and teach them skills.  With a little bit of understanding we can learn how to better teach our children and take care of our families.  Originally this was an article written for permaculture businesses and it will be mentioned a few times in the podcast.  You can find the article link below in the resources part of the post.

This post was recorded live on Facebook Live.  If you have ever wanted to see what it looks like to record a podcast, keep up with me on Twitter and Facebook and you can see when I plan to start the podcast and an early view before it hits the website!

5 Things Fire Department Life Has Right

5 things that fire department life has rightThe Fire Department is a fickle place.  There is a brotherhood that we have all heard of that is so woven into the fabric of fire department life that it just makes sense that we do thing the way that we do.  Today I am giving you a look at what it means to be in the life of the fire department.  Contrary to popular belief we are a family that does family things, just not the same things.  There are a lot of things that we do that civilian families do and can benefit from knowing about and adding to your own daily life.  In a way, the fire department is just a collection of smaller families that come together to make things better.

Please remember that I am currently writing a book that should be finished and available to purchase around the first of the year 2017.  Please deal with my absence from the third show in the week.  I spend the time that is usually done preparing and working on the show to write the book.  More information will soon.

What are things the fire department life does right?

  • We give instant feed back to everyone
  • We have a daily clean up and weekly clean up schedule
  • We stick together through thick and thin
  • We crack jokes with each other
  • We eat together at meals
  • Why and how this can be applicable to your family life
  • I debunk a few myths and concerns that people have
