A Reply to #KidsTodayin4Words

a response to #KidsTodayin4WordsIf you have not figured it out yet, I am on twitter and can be found at @skilledgent.  I was playing around on twitter the other day and found a trending hashtag that worked me up and ended up becoming the topic of today’s show.  It was #KidsTodayin4Words.  I found it very disturbing some of the crap that I saw on there.  It turns out that people have no idea how to raise their children.  They have no idea that they were the same way back when they were kids.  It was amazing to read some of the complaining that people do and really how quickly they resort to violence to solve a problem that does not require, or even need, violence.  This show is dedicated to those who have no idea how to be a Gentleman in a situation that calls for education and resorts to beating a child.  I remember how it was growing up, and I can empathize with children of today with their escapism.  Sometimes instead of being mad about the situation you might have to redirect their energy.  It takes a Gentleman to have the mindset to handle someone that they might not agree or understand.  Check out the disgusting train wreck that is #KidsTodayin4Words.

Why are people so angry in #KidsTodayin4Words

  • What is parenting?
  • Why children are the way they are
  • How they are exactily like us

Throwback- Do you have the Gentleman Mindset

This is a throwback to the podcast Do You Have The Mindset Of A Gentleman. It has come to my attention that there are subscribers that have not been exposed to the older podcasts. While I am in the process of writing my book about Executive Protection for the Family, Wednesday shows will be dedicated to older shows. If you have a favorite show, please email me or contact me to let me know. It can be put in the running for a throwback show.

14396796946_d1468312b8_oToday’s show is meant to challenge your manliness.  If you can tell by the title of the show my question to you is are you in the mindset to be a gentleman?  There are many different schools of thought on being a gentleman and many different definitions, but as for today we are going to make up our own.  You do not have to be a rocket surgeon to know that the state of manliness has been degraded to scenes on Jersey Shore and have been told our grandparents were terrible role models.  I for one feel that men should behave like our grandfathers but in a altered way.  My way of thinking derived from the observation of the men that I see around my daily walk.  Men treating their spouses like garbage or as secondary to them is appalling.  My grandfather was never like this and I never expect him to do so.  So with that, sit back with some coffee or scotch and enjoy the show!

Do you have the Mindset of a Gentleman?

  • What is a gentleman?
  • Can we agree on the terms of gentleman?
  • What is my view on being a gentleman?
  • How we need to be family oriented
  • How we need to be learned
  • How we need to be Consistent/Reliable
  • My finial thoughts on why this matters

How To Increase Your Swagger

increasing your swaggerAccording to the dictionary “swagger” means that you are aggressive and that you are arrogant.  I completely disagree in this completely, I know you are surprised.  Swagger in the terms that I use them in this podcast is the description of what you are about.  Your essence or your air about you.  This can be altered and changed to make yourself better or more attractive.  However, this goes well beyond the fact that you are trying to find someone to date.  This goes into the world of business.  Do you think that having a low amount of confidence could cost you a promotion or even a job?  Of course!  When polled over a large group of women, what do they look for in a man, it came down to a list of qualities that have been transposed and explained on today’s podcast.

Throwback- 15 Chivalrous Things To Do

This is a throwback to the podcast 15 Chivalrous Things You May Not Be Doing.

15 chivalrous things that you may not be doingBeing chivalrous is somewhat of a lost art.  We cannot consider ourselves being gentlemen without analyzing ourselves and finding ways to make ourselves more humble.  There are literately hundreds of ways that men in our day have failed to be a chivalrous gentleman and we need to change this and teach this to our children and the people that look up to us in life.

What are some Chivalrous things that I might not be doing?

Join me today as I discuss:

  • Why we need chivalrous men in this world
  • Why it matters to us
  • The 15 things we can start doing today
  1. Opening the car door
  2. Opening the doors for others
  3. Calling instead of texting
  4. Actually listening and engaging in conversation
  5. Standing up for her
  6. Buying her flowers
  7. Keep your phone in your pocket
  8. Holding the umbrella for her
  9. Dress up for her
  10. Learn about her
  11. Never be late
  12. Make sure she got home safe
  13. Do not worry about her past
  14. Do not play games
  15. Be her gentleman, no one else’s

Kat Needs Our Help

Kat needs our helpKatarina is a 4 year old girl that has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.  This means that her immune system has attacked the pancreas, causing her to not produce insulin.  This is dangerous because your body needs to regulate its blood sugar and without it can lead to a diabetic coma or permanent organ damage.  I brought her and her mother into the studio today to talk to us about what this means to them.  I have brought you guys great content for the past year and a half and do not ask for much in return. I am now asking you guys to man up and show Kat some love. As a firefighter I know how hard diabetes is and I know how quickly an emergency can hit, but then you add onto the extra problem that she is a child. This dog is well trained and can and will save her life. I don’t want this community to look at this and turn your head, I want this community to absolutely blow this donation out of the water.

You can find her Go Fund Me page at https://www.gofundme.com/DogforKat or by clicking on the image above!  Any and all donations are greatly appreciated!  Thank you for your help.

The length of this week has been astronomically long for reasons explained in the podcast today.  It it time to relax beside the pool and enjoy a carbonated piece of history.   That’s right, a cold brew.  Today we will be discussing beer.  But not only beer in the way that it is made or how it is made but the social and physiological side of a brew.  Think it is a boring topic?  Trust me, it has been a blast to make today’s show!

If you are really like beer and wonder which beer you should try next you should try out the new beer review that I have started called Beer Of The Week.

What are the basics of beer?

  • Our move on August 1 2015

Surviving A Long Commute

surviving a long commuteOne of the biggest stresses in life is traffic.  As for myself, I hate traffic and would rather sit in a dentist chair than in traffic.  There is a better way to keep yourself from turning into a ball of stress while sitting in traffic.  Your commute is something that you cannot get out of unless you work from home.  From walking, taking the train, or like most of us you drive there are many different ways that you can keep yourself from freaking out during your commute.  As a Gentleman you should be able to keep yourself from stopping your vehicle, getting out, and pummeling your co-commuters.  The Gentleman does not waste time but uses time wisely to either get things done, relax, or able to learn something new.  This is the topic of the day.  I had this topic sent in by a listener of the podcast.  If you ever have a show idea, you are encouraged to get in touch with me.

How can you survive a long commute?

  • Why the commute is so stressful
  • What Gentlemen do and dont do on the road
  • Different ways to survive the commute

Starting A Bar With BarPrints

starting a bar with barprintsStarting a business is a little more than just waking up one morning and deciding that you want to be a business owner because you don’t want to go to work.  It takes planning, money, and a lot of decision making to go from zero to a hundred and making money.  Today I bring on a Gentleman that starts business for a living.  More specifically Sam starts Hotels.  During the conversation Sam said that he always loved the aspect of starting the bars in the hotels that he starts.  Sam joins us from Jamaica and talks about the entrepreneur mind and helps scratch that itch that you have had forever that constantly asked yourself “I wonder if I could start my own business?”  There are a few things that you have to do to be able to get a business started and Sam goes over that.  Sam also talks about the bar and how those the bar is ran.  Just like talking to an old friend, Sam is easy to listen to and has a lot of knowledge about the topic.

Where to find Sam from Bar prints

You can find Sam on Instagram where he posts pictures and videos under the name barprints.  You can find his page below by clicking on his logo.

Craft Beer Of The Week – ShotGun Betty Hefeweizen Ale

I am starting a craft beer of the week review.  Every week I am going to try a different beer every week.  This can be a review of a different beer even though it is from the same brewery.  The reason why… The same brew masters can come up with different chemistry and create different works of art.

lonerider ShotGun Betty Hefeweizen AleThis week I had ShotGun Betty Hefenweizen Ale from Lonerider Brewery.  Their website can be found at LoneriderBeer.com and their notes about ShotGun Betty can be found here.

Here is what I thought.  Personally I am not a huge fan of canned beers.  I do feel like there is a small “off” taste that the can gives the beer and glass really does a lot to preserve the taste of the beer.  I also feel like the can looses its temperature faster than glass so the beer needs to be drank faster.  Not really sure of the science that could go along with this, just something that I think about.

The Nose

When I popped the top of the can I did get a great pressure release with a nose that smelled of hops, nuts, and a hint of fruit.  The smell is not overpowering like some beers that you can smell from another room.  The nose lasts throughout the entire beer and not trail off during the middle.

The Pour

Most will agree that the pour sets the taste of the beer.  Think of it this way, if you pour and have a small head you will have a lower carbonation beer with a higher alcohol content leading to a heaver beer or one that would be enjoyed in the autumn or winter.  The larger the head will give you a higher carbonation taste with a lower alcohol content leading to a lighter beer or one that would be enjoyed in the spring or summer.  This pour gave a medium head which lead to a beer that made me feel like it was going to be great in the spring.

The Taste

ShotGun Betty has a mixture of tastes.  When you start out you get a rush of complex flavor ranging of malt and hops but not what you would expect from a normal beer.  The taste that sets this beer separate from all other beers is the dry finish.  One one the more exotic beer tastes that I have experienced.  Usually the description of “dry finish” is reserved for dry wines but somehow they have incorporated this aspect into their beer.  Being that it is a Hefenweizen brew it’s sugars are derived from wheat and barley.  You can definitely tell the difference between this Hefenweizen ale and other ales.

The Look

The look of this Hefenweizen Ale is one that is to be desired.  I have always been drawn to the unfiltered beers.  To anyone that brews beer, there is a decision that has to be made.  To filter or not to filter.  You can see in the above picture that this beer has a slight cloud to it.  To some this may be off putting, but to me this means that the taste is more robust.

What is my overall feel of ShotGun Betty?

Overall, I really do like this unique beer and would pass around to my friends or guests on a spring day.  It is light enough to not be a meal by itself but heavy enough to still give you that pause in between the sips.  If you ever have the opportunity to try this beer out, I would encourage you to indulge.

If you have a beer that you would like me to review and post to all of the Skilled Gentlemen Podcast social media outlets and main website, please email me at skilledgentlemen@gmail.com.  The review will be posted to all forms of social media and a detailed review will be posted consisting of the pour, the smell, the look, and an overall feel.

“May the best day of your past be the worst day of your future”, Cheers!
