New Video on YouTube

I have spoken about my chickens and my chicken coop here lately, like on the Triannual Homestead Update show, and realized that I have not shown anyone how it looks now.  Of course you can check out the build on the blog over at 12 mile homestead but a video tour is so much better to watch.  Check it out and if you have any questions, please let me know!

Caring For Your Knife

4970059898_47c855cb72_oA knife is one of the most well known tool that a gentleman can either use to cut down a sapling to saving their life in a SHTF situation.  Every gentleman will wake up and put a knife in their pocket because things need to be cut during the day from a net to cover their flock of birds to defending themselves from a yeti attack.  There are a particular set of rules that everyone needs to know and understand about knifes before purchasing a knife and then caring for a knife when it is in their possession.  That is what we are discussing today.  This topic was brought to you from the Facebook page, so if you have any ideas for shows, please comment in the Facebook page!

Join me today as I talk about

  • Different types of knifes and their purposes
  • How to clean and store knifes
  • Which knifes are tougher than others
  • What does it mean to “daily carry” a knife
  • Purposes of daily carry knifes
  • What kind of knife does a firefighter carry in his pockets

During the show I talked about the coolest cutting board you have ever seen.  Check out this video!

5 More Skills Every Man Should Know

Tennessee-coach-company-mechanic-knox-1943-tn2When looking over the vast array of skills my grandfathers and father posses it hales in comparison in what I am able to do.  I am here today to gather a small list of skills that I feel every man should know how to do.  I do dive somewhat into every one so the podcast is a little longer than usual, however if I feel like they should be on the show, I am going to go into depth with them.  I challenge to you is that you should come up with a few ideas in regard to skills.  Below is a comment section that you should type into and let me know what you think about them.  The old phrase that you are a jack of all trades and a master of none applies today.  We all can be a jack of all trades, or in this sense a jack of all skills, in our own walks of life by adding a little bit of effort and doing out best to learn.  So man up, grab a beer, and lets dive in.

Join me today as I talk about:

  • Basic vehicle maintenance
  • Cooking a meal
  • Slow dance
  • Calculate a tip without a phone
  • Make a pot of coffee

Triannual Homestead Update – April 2015

11406_958915917460329_1260049574313699950_nI decided to do a little update every now and again.  As a matter of fact, I will be doing an update 3 times a year.  The idea is so that maybe I can start a little fire in your belly to start your own homestead, even on a quarter of an acre.  I have accomplished a lot so far and plan to continue to accomplish a lot throughout the year.  Stay informed by heading over to the blog at blog.skilledgentlemen.com.  That is where you can learn about what I am doing and how to do it yourself!

Today I talk about

  • Why I am doing this homestead
  • What I have accomplished throughout this past year
  • What I hope to do by August (next show)

Executive Protection for the Family – CPR

3704259986_84273aefddOne of the most scariest things you can go through as a parent or just a human is doing CPR on someone.  I can remember everything about my first CPR that I done and most of the others that I have been able to do.  When it comes to doing CPR most times people will freeze up and not know what to do when asked to do this life saving skill.  There are too many things that can go wrong and there is a possibility for being legally responsible for your actions.  Today I am going to help bust some myths and enlighten you about CPR.  Understand that when you listen to this podcast you are not going to learn how to do it.  That is for someone with an instructor certification, not me.  However, there is a lot that I can teach you by listening today.  In reality there is no reason why you, as a gentleman, learn how to do CPR.

So why should men learn CPR?

Join me as I talk about:

  • How to spot someone in need of help
  • Why it is necessary to learn CPR
  • What should you expect
  • Why this matters

Principals of Loosing Weight

hans_and_franzIt is something that every man comes up against at least once in their lifetime.  We look in the mirror and see someone that we do not agree with.  Maybe we have been stress eating or drinking too many beers but regardless of the reason, something has to be done about the spare tire we have picked up.  Today’s show is all about this.  There is a difference between safe weight loss and fad diets that leave you hungry and looking to score some pizza.  The main principal is that you need to exert more calories than you consume in daily life.  Easier said than done.  Tune in and check out what there is to know about common sense weight loss.  But weight loss is not just about caloric intake and caloric output.  Weight loss is also working out, sleeping, cooking, and in general better health.

So why should men know the principals of weight loss?

Join me today as I discuss:

  • Benefits of weight loss
  • How much easier everything is
  • How to alter your diet instead of dieting
  • What kind of mindset do you need

Executive Protection for the Family – Medical pt 1

Japanese_World_War_II_first_aid_kitIn the interview that I did with Bob Mayne I briefly spoke about during a medical emergency you have to silence that screaming voice in the back of your head.  There was a question that popped up on the forum concerning that not many people outside of the medical/rescue field would know how to do this or be able to preform like this.  I am going to try my best to do that today on the show.  I understand that what I am explaining will be hard to do, but there is utility to what I am talking about.  There is a lot to learn concerning this topic and so I am going to do my best to explain how to get training to preform in a medical emergency.  When we focus our minds on how scary the situation is and how things could go wrong we tend to make mistakes.  I went through those issues when I first started running medical emergencies.  When I got good at running medical calls is when I mentally separated myself from the situation and become somewhat cold to the situation.  I can not explain it any other way but be apathetic to the situation and the situation tends to not be as real.  I briefly describe this in the podcast and this is a skill that every gentleman should be able to focus on being about to accomplish.

So how do we prepare for medical emergencies involving our family?

Join me today as I discuss:

  • Emotions and why they suck
  • Where to find medical training
  • How to get medical training for free
  • Cheap ways to find training
  • How I dealt with the anxiety of preforming CPR

Reinventing Yourself

Paul_Newman_1954There comes a time in a mans life that he decides that he needs to reinvent himself.  This could be because it is the beginning of a new year or it could be because of a breakup.  No matter the reason, there is a right and a wrong way to do this.  Todays show is all about the idea of reinventing yourself.  If last weeks podcast The Death Of The American Gentleman hit you hard or pissed you off, todays show is how to fix that problem.  The “how to” of change.  Everyone has heard that men should be be able to do this and be able to do that but what do we want.  What do we want to be like?  To reinvent yourself is to hit the reset button and turn ourselves into what we want to be like.

Join me today as we discuss:

My Interview with Bob Mayne Of Today’s Survival Show

my interview with bob mayne of today's survival showA few days ago I had the great pleasure of speaking with Bob Mayne.  He hosts a show called Today’s Survival Show and second show called Handgun World Podcast both of which I subscribe to.  I am a huge fan of Bobs work and was star struck when he allowed me to speak on his show about Executive Protection for the Family.  If you have been listening to this for any lengh of time you will know that I am developing a concept of being a executive protection agent for your family and friends.  Boiled down, being a gentleman.  That was the topic for the show that was recorded on March 27, 2015.  Below is the About tab on his website if you would like to jump over and get some great information about him.

Today’s Survival Show is the creation of Bob Mayne. I am an everyday guy, not a survival teacher or author. I give you an everyday guy’s perspective on getting prepared for events that can happen on a daily basis, as well as those rare events that are extremely catastrophic. However, I don’t engage in tinfoil hat thinking. I keep it full of common sense to help you “do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are.” This podcast is published once a week. I live in San Antonio, TX with my family. Thanks for downloading and listening.
